The belief that Republicans are better stewards of the economy is a persistent fallacy. Beyond available historical data, which is compelling, the economic realities under the current administration and the Republican-controlled Congress prove otherwise. Recent economic policies, and most specifically protectionist tariffs that function as a regressive consumption tax, have combined with rising geopolitical instability (including President Trump’s war of choice with Iran) to weaken our economy. The results are painfully clear, higher prices for everyday necessities and widespread job losses across key industry sectors, including manufacturing. The hard truth is that Republican policy decisions are driving up out-of-pocket expenses for basic necessities such as gas, groceries, utilities, and health care. Economists estimate these tariffs alone add families, severely eroding household purchasing power. Given that these tariffs act as a consumption tax, they place a disproportionately higher burden on low- and middle-income Americans. The higher wage-earning members of our current K-shaped economy have more disposable cash, so the pain is primarily experienced by those with fewer resources who are simply trying to make ends meet on a daily basis. While many voters feel increasingly squeezed and disillusioned, change is within reach this upcoming November. If we want an economy that works for everyday citizens, we must replace representatives who contribute to failed policies. I urge voters to consider Ray Bilger to replace Rep. Glenn Thompson to help create a course-correction which includes turning our economy around.
