Let’s Talk About Abortion Rights

Abortion rights are the product of legislators who were responding to a large group of people struggling for better medical care for mothers during pregnancy. These rights are meant to be improved, not to be ripped away by a 6-3 Supreme Court judicial decision because of conflicting political beliefs about how medical care should be administered to pregnant mothers.

For about 50 years, all states respected the abortion rights decision, but it was under constant attack by the GOP, who succeeded, in my opinion, by corruptly installing a majority of justices in the Supreme Court. Their decision moved the abortion question to state jurisdiction.

GOP-controlled states are busy enacting draconian restrictive laws that criminalize and punish medical professionals for administering the best prenatal care available to mothers and their developing babies. Each day, heartbreaking stories circulate in our news media about mothers who are burdened with unnecessary pain and suffering because state legislators are empowered to create laws on how natural human life processes mature.

How do any governing legislators who have no intimate connection to these complex processes of life have any right to make laws and decisions about how medical care is administered?

These decisions are best left to the medical professionals, mothers, and their partners.

However, governments do have a responsibility to see that appropriate care and nurturing are available to every mother and child until maturity and for the few with special needs.
