A growing number of Americans are realizing that the current administration has become a runaway train, lacking a coherent driver or a functional braking system. While our Founding Fathers faced their own unique challenges, they would likely be appalled by the current abdication of Congress in providing even a modest degree of checks and balances. This failure is most glaring regarding unilateral acts of war, the alienation of long-standing allies and the mounting economic burdens foisted upon our citizenry. This lapse in responsibility lies squarely with the Republican leadership in both the House and Senate. Locally, the inaction of Reps. Dan Meuser and GT Thompson suggests a preference for sycophancy over constitutional duty. It is difficult to isolate a single “renegade” action when so many significant policy shifts are based on the president’s “gut feelings” rather than deliberate strategy. These impulsive decisions have eroded our global leadership and left many families facing a demoralizing economic reality. There is, however, a rational solution. If our current representatives refuse to act as a check on executive overreach, we must replace them with officials who will actually represent the growing majority of us who demand stability and accountability. The most powerful tool in our democratic arsenal is the right to vote. I urge every citizen in our region to look closely at the damage done by this legislative silence and thoughtfully exercise that tool this coming November 2026. It is time to restore the balance our republic requires.
