In response to the letter published Jan. 23 by William Folk, McClure: You may be a Democrat if you believe that democracy and the rule of law should be upheld rather than threatened, and that truth is important, even when it’s uncomfortable. You believe health care, education and voting are rights — not privileges. You believe immigrants are family members, neighbors and business owners, not enemies. You value empathy, decency and facts over fear and lies. You believe democracy is sacred — not something to overthrow when you lose. You think facts matter more than feelings and lies. You believe no one is above the law, including the president. You reject cruelty as policy — especially toward immigrants and children. You believe government should serve people and you value justice, equality and truth over fear, grievance and rage. Democrats believe in equality for all Americans, emphasizing civil rights and opportunity regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or background. Democrats champion policies designed to reduce discrimination, strengthen economic security and ensure equal access to health care, education and voting rights. Democrats believe in the vision of America by following the principles of love thy neighbor, feeding the poor, healing the sick and welcoming the stranger, as all major faiths teach us.
