UNION COUNTY DEMOCRATIC
COMMITTEE

WHERE THE
PEOPLE COME FIRST!

Greetings, Union County Dems
and Friends!
I wanted to take a couple
minutes to say a few words on be- half of the County Committee and myself,
and to thank you in advance for your support in the past and in the days ahead.
By the time you read this,
Pennsylvanians will be up to our eyeballs with the Obama and Clinton shows,
with both candidates and their staffs traipsing across the state, from Philly
to Pittsburgh, Erie to Lancaster, Scranton to Harrisburg, and various locales
in between. With any amount of luck, we’ll attract one or both candidates
to our neck of the woods. At the very least, I believe we can expect
a visit or two from some very “high profile” surrogates, but the two we really
want to meet here are Hillary and Barack. And we very well may have that opportunity.
This part of the state,
and especially Union County, has been raising eyebrows for
the past couple of years. We’ve gotten
some serious attention from both the State
and National Democratic Committees. We’re doing
some amazing work (as you’ll read about elsewhere in this newsletter), and
I believe we have earned the reputation of being perhaps the most active
Democratic Committee in this part of PA. Our voices are being heard in Harrisburg
and Washington.
Late March and April are going
to be busy times for us. Not only do we have the Presidential race going on,
but we’ve also got two Union County residents running for offices in Harrisburg.
Trey Casimir, in his first major run
for an office, will be seeking the position of State Senator in the 23rd
District. Steve Connolley will be seeking election to the State House. While
neither are facing ballot competition in the primary, we need to start gearing
up now for their runs in November. There also will be several
state-wide races going on, for State Treasurer, Attorney General, and Auditor
General. All of these races will need our attention, our time, our efforts,
and our financial contributions. It’s not going to be easy with so many good
Democratic candidates running in 2008, but guess what? I wish we had this
problem every year! We will, for the first time in my memory, have a Democrat
running for every position on the ballot! How cool is that?
I want to make a quick point here. Many of you may be
wondering if the Union County Democratic Committee will be endorsing
anyone in the Primary. The short answer
is “No,” we will not. If a candidate is running unopposed in the primary,
and several are, then we will, in most cases, endorse them early. But when
we have situations such as the Clinton-Obama race, we will not endorse either
candidate. We, as a Committee, will work to promote Democratic principals
and ideals. We will not get into a battle between two very fine,
well-qualified people. It just doesn’t make sense
to do so. Everyone is free to work for either candidate they choose, but we
(the UCDC) will strive to help both candidates equally, without choosing a
“favorite.” I would highly encourage all Dems to keep their differences
of opinion regarding either candidate respectful, and based on facts. Let’s
save any passionate arguments against someone for the race in November. Beating
each other up during the Primary will not make us stronger. It will only make
it more difficult to do what we all need to do in November: institute a major
shift in power in both Harrisburg and Washington. I believe most of us will
be happy to have either Ms. Clinton or Mr. Obama as our candidate against
John McCain. So you can see we have our work cut out for us. We’ll be working
hard for our favorites in the primary. We’ll be working even harder for our
candidates between April 23 and November 4. This is
a good time to be a Democrat. Let’s make
the most of it!
— Rick Thomas, chair, UCDC
