On Monday, May 18, 2009, the Union County Democratic Committee passed
a motion to support the efforts currently under way to pass the Employee
Free Choice Act in the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
The Committee also signed a petition addressed to Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA)
encouraging him to reconsider his recently announced opposition to the passage
of the Employee Free Choice Act. We recognize just how important this legislation
is to our sisters and brothers in organized labor and to many of our fellow
Democrats.
The EFCA legislation is designed to protect a worker’s right to choose
just how they are represented in the workplace, with a minimum of interference
by employers. It would also assure that if a group of employees choose to
organize and join a union, that there would be time tables in place to assure
that employers bargain in good faith with their employees. The legislation
is not, and does not, take away employee’s rights to a “secret ballot,” should
they, the employees, decide to go that route. They may also to choose a majority
“card check” option to be represented by a union.
The members of the UCDC encourage all employers and employees to participate
in good faith bargaining, and understand that the American economy depends
on a strong and vibrant middle class. Passage of the Employee Free Choice
Act will help to guarantee that American workers are truly “free to choose”
who represents their interests in the workplace.
